Ry Shorosky's world of color

Meet Ry Shorosky, a multi-talented photographer who wears many hats, almost literally (he definitely wears a cowboy hat). He lives his life as a part-time trucker, cowboy, and creative. Whether he's behind the wheel of a long-haul truck or amidst the dust and glory of a rodeo, he has his camera with him, ready to capture the far-flung corners of the US in his signature dreamy color palette. For this special occasion though, we equipped him with a Polaroid Generation 2 Now+ instant camera and our i-Type color film to interpret, "Real Life is color you can't control". This is how it went down...

Ry typically uses his iPhone as his camera of choice. So the idea of slowing down, uncertainty, and the unknown meant he had to step away from his digital comfort zone. But actually, Ry quickly found that these very qualities became his greatest tools. He welcomed the uncertainty and let go of his expectations. It became a source of excitement and he quickly found himself where he always strives to be as a creative - truly enjoying the process and all of its uncertainties, because color was something he literally could not control.

"I'd notice colors I wasn't expecting and instead of that hindering my vision it actually allowed for space to play around with the process in real-time which was really exciting and pure to me”

He also couldn't control the weather. Shooting on days with a slightly briskier temperature, Ry noticed cool tones appearing in his shots that he couldn't explain. Turns out that temperature was playing a major role in the colors he was capturing. He learned firsthand how the temperature can work wonders on Polaroid film. So he decided to experiment and shoot in a different location with a few degrees extra. And just like that, a whole new range of colors appeared.

Ry's photographs capture the feeling of freedom and adventure that comes with traveling on the open road, all shot in a range of wildly different colors. From dreamy bubblegum skies to deep, warm hues, each shot evokes a distinct mood and atmosphere, inviting us to be fully immersed by these rich tones.

Color has so much to do with how we see and feel through the world, says Ry. It's so connected to our emotions and experiences, and has the ability to evoke all sorts of feelings and sensations. For him, the fleeting beauty of color that surrounds us in everyday life is a reminder to be present in the moment, and to appreciate the vivid colors that surround us.

"It's the colors of a sunset that sometimes only last a moment and so we're reminded to be in the present."

Ry's journey with color has been quite a ride. When he first got into photography, he was all about capturing real life's colors and spent countless hours in the darkroom perfecting his shots. It was like an obsession for him, super precise and meticulous. But he soon figured out that the world he was capturing wasn't an accurate reflection of how he felt inside. That's when he started playing around with color, letting his creative side run wild and he discovered how color could be a tool for his own expression.

Shooting with our Polaroid camera became an extension of his experimentation with color. The unique characteristics like unpredictability and unexpected colors allowed him to create images that are wildly immersive. With the Polaroid film, the colors were something totally out of his hands.

"I recently heard a quote from Willem Dafoe that I think fits perfectly with my experience shooting this campaign - "when you understand something too much it's done."

It's a reminder to embrace the unexpected and to focus on capturing the essence of real life and being in the moment, rather than trying to fully understand every aspect of it. It's about just getting out there, trying things and seeing what happens. That's all part of capturing real life. Ready to get out there or looking for more inspiration?
