"The Polaroid Book"
With the Museum's help, I found about six people who once lived in the tenement and who were willing to be photographed. I photographed them in the actual rooms that they lived in, perhaps 60 to 70 years ago. Often, some of the furniture in the rooms dated back to that bygone time. In a few instances, I also photographed the individuals in front of the building.
Obviously, it was an emotional experience for these people. Memories and recollections poured forth. I tried to be as respectful and sensitive to them as possible and spent many hours talking to them before, during and after the photo session. Some of the subjects, who agreed to and wanted to be part of the project but either physically or emotionally did not want to return to the building, were photographed in or around their homes.
