"The
surfaces of her work, however, are not fixed. The dyes and silver
salts used in the Polaroid process continue to oxidize, giving
the images more tonal and textual variation. The effects Ellen
Carey creates are nothing short of painterly, and are of an
uncommon, pure beauty," she continued.
At the
Wadsworth Atheneum, Carey showed fourteen richly pigmented
monochromatic abstractions created with the world's largest
camera. Monumental in scale, they measure more than twelve
feet high and 44 inches wide. Five recent works created with the Polaroid 20 x 24 camera were also on view.
