The 18th Street Arts Center brought together photographers, visual and performance artists and a child to make Polaroid instant portraits of one another. According to curator and artist Michael Sakamoto, “Participants were paired up, asked each other 20 questions, and then each took 20 photographs stimulated by the responses.” Based upon the game of Twenty Questions, the performance examined issues of portraiture, object-based image making and verbal communication.
Using Spectra cameras and film, the photographers focused on capturing the moment, harboring no thoughts of camera technology or digital manipulation. Spontaneity and creativity were the operative words.
Titled 20/20, the exhibition debuted on November 4th at the Center as part of ArtNight where it will remain on view until December 22, 2006. Participating artists include Kelly Akashi, Joe Biel, Jeff Cain, Penelope Davis, Lauren Hartman, Carry Kim, Mare Milin, Michael Sakamoto, Linda Carmella Sibio, Hannah Sim, Daniel Wild and Elizabeth Wild.
18th Street Arts Center is an international artist residency center supporting emerging and mid-career artists and arts organizations in Southern California. |
