Mystical
Memories
The pinhole
photography of
Jesseca Ferguson
|
|
Usually
I work in my own studio, setting up arrangements of images
and objects culled from my "museum of memory"
my personal collection of oddments, books, and artifacts.
Using only natural light, my exposures often take several
hours. I then contact print my images using 19th century techniques
(or modern versions of antique processes) requiring ultra-violet
light. Sometimes I collage my pinhole images onto antique
book boards, incorporating fragments of text and time-stained
papers, thus creating a "photo object." These collaged
artifacts allude to the passage of time and to collective
and personal memory.

Often
books serve as models, as sources, and as raw material for my
images. The idea of the book and the secret world it opens into
is at the core of my work. Prior to an artist-in-residency I
enjoyed in Skopelos, Greece, my only knowledge of Greece was
derived from books (legends, myths, art history) and museums.
In the flea market and old bookshops of Athens and on the beaches
of Skopelos, I found the objects and images I needed for my
still-life set-ups. All my negatives were made with Polaroid
4x5 Type 55 film and natural light, with some exposures lasting
several hours or more. My photographic fictions of Greece emerged
from this combination of time, light and found artifacts. |
