RICHMOND, Va. (May 5, 2008) -Reed Sorenson and the Target team had a strong weekend at Richmond International Raceway. Sorenson qualified for the 400-lap event in fifth and then drove a solid race to finish 12th. The second top-15 finish of the season helped Sorenson gain two positions in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) owner point standings.
The opening laps of the race appeared to be very promising with Sorenson keeping his Target Dodge in the top five for the first 42 laps. When the first caution flag waved on lap 65, Sorenson radioed to tell his crew chief Donnie Wingo he only needed minor adjustments. The team entered pit road for four tires, fuel and a slight track bar adjustment.
Sorenson restarted in ninth and continued to compete within the top10 until the caution waved for the second time on lap 120. The Target Dodge was forced to restart 20th when Tony Stewart brushed the No. 41 Dodge while exiting his pit, forcing Sorenson off the jack stand.
The No. 41 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) Dodge went down a lap to leader Denny Hamlin on lap 190 while running 24th. Sorenson continued to show patience on the .75-mile short track and was awarded the “Lucky Dog” pass on lap 219.
As the race continued Sorenson was able to avoid several wrecks including a multi-car crash on lap 226 which brought out the red flag. He continued to stay on the lead lap for the remainder of the event and crossed the finish line in 12th place.
The Target Team moved up two positions to 30th in the NSCS owner standings. Sorenson is 203 points out of 20th and 357 out of 12th, the final cut-off of the Chase. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Darlington Raceway for the Dodge Challenger 500. The race is set to run Saturday, May 10, and will air on FOX (TV) at 7 p.m. ET and MRN (Radio) at 7:30 p.m. ET.
CGRFS QUOTEBOARD:
“It was a pretty good day for the Target Team. That was definitely the kind of finish we needed after the last few races. I think if we had another caution we would have been able to get a top10. It was hard to gain ground. You could run them down a little at a time, but track position is key at Richmond. Overall, it was a good night.”
