New York Underground Scenesters of the 70s and 80s Captured on Polaroid
To many the New York underground scene of the late 70s and 80s was like a star-studded dream—a creative playground where future talents rubbed Fiorucci-clad shoulders and refined street culture into a fine art form. Too few have lucid memories of the era, and we are often left to decipher the events through the occasional concert ticket or matchbook. But for those lucky and sober enough to have snapped a photograph, the medium of choice to capture the ephemeral moment was likely the Polaroid SX-70.

Photographer Christopher Makos was no stranger to the NY scene. Credited with teaching Andy Warhol how to use a camera and introducing the artist to then unknowns Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Makos served as art director for Warhol’s first book of photographs, Exposures. In a recent feature, “Christopher Makos: Polaroids,” NOWNESS.com showcased a series of the artist’s work from the late 70s and early 80s, including photographs of Warhol’s factory and a close-up with Deborah Harry. All shots were taken using his beloved Polaroid SX-70.
"The Polaroid was so cool at the time,” says Makos. “We would all just take pictures of each other and pass them around, sort of the way that people pass around images on Facebook, writing on their wall, poking them––I think you get the picture!"

A constant in the New York fashion and music scenes in the 80s, and best known for creating Madonna’s Like a Virgin look, artist-stylist Maripol documented the wild nights out featuring Madge and other celebrity friends (like Grace Jones and Deborah Harry) using her Polaroid SX-70. Many of her images were previewed on NOWNESS.com to celebrate the publication of her latest book, Maripol: Little Red Riding Hood.
Says Maripol: "I used the Polaroid because of the the instant, no-need-for-the-lab magic moment; the excitment of seeing it developed in front of your eyes! I used it more in the 80s because I moved on to film and digital, but if it’s back I might become obsessive again!"
